Open Search Executive Director

Visit Harford is a 501(c)(6) organization and was established in 2013 as Harford County’s Destination Marketing Organization (DMO) leading the charge for tourism in the county. Our Mission is to promote Harford County and to enhance visitors’ experience. Our vision is to showcase Harford County as a go-to destination. Visit Harford maintains strong partnerships with local hotels, restaurants, event venues, and entertainment attractions to draw new and returning visitors to Harford County. With flexible operations, we can adapt quickly to the ever-changing hospitality world. Visit Harford brings together the community, businesses, organizations, and government to make Harford County a premier destination for tourism on the East Coast. The organization is governed by a prominent and influential Board of Directors consisting of leaders from various sectors of tourism, hospitality, travel, retail, local government, and the community. In recent years, Visit Harford’s impact has contributed accelerated growth to the county and significantly increased tourism revenue for local businesses.

The Opportunity

The Board of Directors of Visit Harford is conducting a search for a dynamic, mission-driven, hands-on executive with broad business experience to lead the organization. The Executive Director is the public “face” of Visit Harford, representing the organization within Harford County, building relationships and alliances with other tourism groups regionally, nationally, and internationally. The Executive Director will have a keen desire to identify and cultivate sustainable relationships with strategic partners in businesses, community groups, and local officials that support tourism. In addition, the Executive Director will work to continue to enhance the governance and leadership capabilities of the Board. The new Executive Director is expected to lead Visit Harford to its next phase, building upon strong momentum and recent results. He or she will be a self-directed professional capable of leading the organization to the next level of innovation and contribution by:

• Providing leadership in evolving and implementing Visit Harford’s organizational vision, mission, and strategic priorities. • Developing a thorough understanding of and commitment to the Visit Harford’s strategic plan.

• Supporting the development of a vital organizational future by continuing to cultivate, expand and make the best use of Visit Harford’s Board, staff, and volunteers.

• Serving as an agent of the Board to maintain financial integrity and provide fiduciary duty over the assets and reputation of Visit Harford.

• Demonstrating a strong ability to raise community awareness and clearly articulate an innovative message of purpose, vision, and direction of Visit Harford.

The Executive Director will be responsible for management oversight of Visit Harford, working closely with the Operations Manager and Marketing specialists. The Executive Director will work closely with the Board of Directors to develop and implement the organization’s vision and strategic plan. This role requires extensive collaboration, communication, and presentation skills. This is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic professional with the ability to grow an organization, expand its programming, and communicate Visit Harford’s vision and goals to stakeholders, public/private sector partners, and the local community.

The ideal candidate is a seasoned leader with executive management experience and a record of significant success in relevant contexts. Entrepreneurial, innovative, and goal-oriented, the Executive Director will ideally possess the following professional qualifications and personal attributes:

Professional Qualifications:

• A visionary, inspiring leader, and a thoughtful communicator with an authentic commitment to advocating on behalf of Harford County tourism. The Executive Director will be comfortable working with a strong Board as well as elected officials and legislative bodies at the local, state, and federal level.

• A management style that is goal oriented, but flexible; that respects the capabilities and independence of staff but provides them with a clear sense of direction.

• Experience building effective networks, partnerships, and/or coalitions.

• Demonstrated financial and business acumen; a laser focused approach to developing a strong tourism ROI.

• An ability to attract, retain, and manage a supporting team who share the Visit Harford vision and possess the capacity to fulfill the organization’s mission.

• The highest level of personal and professional integrity and quality standards.

• Bachelor’s degree and at least five years progressive leadership experience, with tourism, marketing, or communications preferred, or equivalent combination.

Personal Attributes:

• Likable, approachable, with solid interpersonal skills; the Executive Director must be able to engender trust and empathy and relate to strategic partners in a highly professional, sincere and considerate manner.

Compensation for the Executive Director includes a base salary in the mid 80’s with other benefits including health, dental, retirement options, and paid leave.
