Did you know that the Maryland tradition of snowballs dates back to the 1800s? It’s true! Trucks that were shipping ice to the south would pass through the Baltimore area, and kids would chase them asking for ice shavings. When the shavings were brought home, moms would make flavored syrups and pour them over top of the ice. This cheap treat became known as the hard times sundae or the penny sundae and eventually donned the name, “Snowball.” This local summertime favorite is best kept cold in a Styrofoam cup and can be accompanied by marshmallow cream topping. The ice may be shaved- but not enough to dissolve. Your snowball will remain intact enough to survive a humid Harford County summer. Harford County is home to more than 10 different Snowball stands that stem from the northern Harford County towns of Jarrettsville, Whiteford and Dublin and across the county to towns such as Fallston, Abingdon, Aberdeen and Havre de Grace. Take a glance at the entire list of Snowball Stands in Harford County at the list below, and be sure to download the Harford Digital Passport and take a trip along our “Snowball Trail-“one of the many experiential trails for everyone to enjoy at VisitHarford.com!
